World Spay Day Commemoration

Image
World Spay day was commemorated on February 26th, and to play our role in the significance of this day, ALL CREATURES Lilongwe organized a two-day Spay and neuter mobile clinic in the Chinsapo area in Lilongwe. Chinsapo is a high density area with  mostly low income families so to offer this service is a big deal. This took place on February 23rd and 24th, from 8:00 am to around 4 pm.  People and their dogs gathered at the Chinsapo clinic in the early morning hours. This was a team effort by ALL CREATURES staff and volunteers.  There were three vets on hand to do the surgeries, three nurses and several staff helping around with anything from preparing the dogs for surgery, making sure there was organization and that things were moving smoothly.  All in all, it was a successful effort as more than 150 dogs were spayed and neutered. Delightful Daisy

Image
Daisy's story is traumatic and inspiring at the same time.  Traumatic because she was found hit by a car on the side of the road, left to die. She was extremely critical when ALL CREATURES found her, literally just bones. She was severely wounded and lost a lot of fur from her injuries.  She came to ALL CREATURES in 2018.  Her left hind leg got amputated and it took four months to heal after surgery. If you saw her today, you would know that she is a survivor, that's what makes her story inspiring. She is very good with people but slightly dominant with other dogs. APRIL NEWS!

Image
WORLD VETERINARY DAY- April 20th On 26th April, we celebrated World Veterinary Day by offering free deworming to our clients. We would like to show our gratitude to our three phenomenal vets who work tirelessly to help the animals of Malawi. Thank you Dr. Richard, Dr. Delphine, and Dr. Pacifique for choosing a profession that isn't the prettiest or most luxurious, but one of upmost importance, providing necessary medical assistance to those without a voice. On World Vet Day, our vets performed a serious orthopedic surgery to a small pup who had been accidentally run over by a car and severely fractured his leg. Teddy was brought in immediately, which helped save his leg. We asked Dr. Banza to come in to assist as they had to insert surgical pins to place the leg and reduce the fracture. After being wrapped in a cast, Teddy is now healing well and will hopefully learn his lesson to not chase cars! Once again, we owe thanks to our vet team, a one of...

First Mass Community Spay Clinic in Mzuzu

A group of American veterinarians and vet techs mobilized resources as a team to conduct a spay and neuter clinic in Mzuzu at the St Augustine Catholic Parish. ALL CREATURES coordinated and organised the logistics for this landmark activity to further extend its support to the Mzuzu ADD and the Mzuzu City Council in controlling the swelling stray dog population and the looming crisis of canine rabies in the community.  This year alone, ALL CREATURES Mzuzu Veterinary Centre has confirmed 5 rabies cases, of only reported cases. This may just be the tip of the iceberg and therefore this year's Volunteer efforts of sterilizing all the pets that were brought give our community activity a new dimension.  the team managed to sterilize 197 dogs over a period of three days. The team comprised of five veterinary doctors, predominantly from the United States. ALL CREATURES and the team would like to inform all potential candidates to participate in next year's Vo...

MZADD blames migrants for the rise in stray dogs

Mzuzu, May 18, 2018:  Mzuzu Agriculture Development Division (Mzadd) has bemoaned the tendency by some city residents to abandon their dogs whenever they relocate to other areas, saying the situation has given rise to stray dogs in the city. Speaking in an interview Wednesday, Mzadd Programmes Manager Wellington Phewa, said the rise in stray dogs is compromising efforts to fight rabies in the city as there is nobody to take them for vaccination. Phewa bemoaned that Mzadd and Mzuzu City Council’s joint effort to remove homeless dogs from the streets is seemingly in vain as the number keeps increasing. “We are still encountering the problem of increase in stray dogs because most people, when moving out of the city, tend to leave their dogs behind without anyone to care for them,” he said. He added that though city bylaws restrict the number of dogs per household to two, some have more dogs which they fail to manage.  “We are appealing to all people to be responsible a...

ROOTS & SHOOTS Club - Educating our Youth

Image
ROOTS & SHOOTS Malawi Youth Education on Animal Welfare, Environmental Sustainability, and Community Engagement  As many schools went on holiday for the month of December, one of our largest Roots & Shoots clubs remained very active in their community and here at ALL CREATURES. Lead by Education Coordinator, Joshua Nyasulu, several Chinsapo Youth Club volunteers came to our facility to teach our caretaker how to build fire briquettes, using paper instead of firewood. This is a more environmentally sustainable activity as we no longer have to rely on trees but on old scrap paper that we collect around the office as well as from our Roots & Shoots clubs. These briquettes act as charcoal and burn much longer than typical charcoal and firewood.  ALL CREATURES Care taker and Chinsapo Youth R&S Club Volunteers shred paper for briquettes The final product, briquettes, which need 5-7 to fully dry                Ma...

Protection Against Animal Cruelty- WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT?

Image
PROTECTION AGAINST ANIMAL CRUELTY: VET STORIES  Our vets in the ALL CREATURES Clinic had some extraordinary work to do this month. We had several cases of abuse and neglect but none as bad as Biscuit's, a small puppy who was rescued by a film crew in Kasungu after seeing his owner kick and beat it with a stick. The beating was so bad, Biscuit needed a metal rod put into his shoulder, which was quite a complex surgery (see xray below) . Biscuit is only about 5 months old, which means he should fully heal and soon be able to walk without pain or a limp. It is an absolute atrocity to hear of someone beating a puppy this young. We are so happy the members of the film crew came to his rescue and immediately took him away from his owner, no questions asked. Luckily Biscuit is still the world's happiest puppy who greets everyone he sees and is desperate for playmates! Our vets also had a case where Frozy (pictured below) had been stoned by his owner's neighbo...

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANIMAL WELFARE & ANIMAL RIGHTS

Image
In Malawi and indeed many African countries that I have lived, the phrases ‘animal rights’ and ‘animal welfare’ are often used interchangeably, but there is a significant difference between the two. It is therefore our role as animal welfare people to try and paint the difference between these two significantly different ideologies as any advocate for animal compassion is dismissed immediately as a space wasting animal rightist in most social settings.  It is with cynicism that most animal well being advocates are viewed by the general public and sadly also by policy developers. This is indeed the reason why most African countries grapple with archaic or even non-existent animal utilization regulations. Animal utilization by man-kind has been documented in many different spheres of society that varies from status, haulage, food, war, medicine, tourism, culture & tradition, security and even worship. This is by no means an exhaustive list of human use for animals but demo...

RABIES VACCINATION OF DOGS IN KANINGINA MZUZU

Image
After establishing our new Mzuzu  Animal Resource Centre , we conducted a mass rabies vaccination campain at the Veterinary Clinic that is located in Kanigina Mzuzu.  Rabies is among the worst zoonotic disease in the world and responsible for over 70,000 human deaths annually. The control of this viral disease control continues to pose global public health challenges in the developing world. In developing countries, over 90% of confirmed and reported cases of human exposure are from domestic dogs. In Malawi ALL CREATURES ANIMAL WELFARE TRUST partnered with the Mzuzu City Council, Mzuzu ADD and the Humane Society International to rid Mzuzu City of this killer disease. In August ALL CREATURES run a similar exercise with the Community Veterinary Clinic (Florida)  under the Community Health Coalition to vaccinate all the dogs in Enkwendeni in South Mzimba. The rabies vaccination clinic held on the 2 nd December vaccinated over 640 dogs f...
