Animal health is a crucial component of animal welfare; it is based on this premise that ALL CREATURES Animal Resource Centre, a tributary of the ALL CREATURES Animal Welfare Trust, was established. Since June 2016, the Animal Resource Centre has been providing the residents of Lilongwe and beyond with veterinary services which are aimed at improving the wellbeing of animals. Although the centre was providing much needed services, the centre was keen on improving the services provided. The centre was still in need of some essential equipment that would allow for the provision of excellent professional service. In less than a year of commencing our operations at the Animal Resource Centre, we have been able to source state of the art equipment which has augmented the quality of service that we provide. Chinsapo is just about a 7-10 minute drive from the central business district of old town in Lilongwe, although it is very close to the city’s hub, Chinsapo is an urban, high density, low income area. And as is the case with many Malawian families, many families in Chinsapo have pets. The most common being cats and dogs, but it has been the case, again as is the case with in many low income communities in Malawi that the cats and dogs are barely ever spayed or neutered. This is not due to the fact that the people in these communities know nothing about spaying and neutering but has more to do with the depth of knowledge on the benefits of spay and neuter. Another reason why the dogs and cats in these communities are barely spayed or neutered is because the people in these communities are unable to pay for the required surgery as they cannot afford to due to the strength of their earning power. Of “cats and dogs” not literally but very nearly so; the rains have come down hard these past few weeks, they still are, felling fences and flooding homes in its course. It even rendered some roads momentarily impassable such as the area 49-18 road in Lilongwe. There was much relief when the rains started, in these times when rainfall is quite unpredictable, any consistency of the shower is very encouraging to the general population, many of which survive on crops they grow for subsistence. But as has been the case in recent days, the downpour has been magnanimous, to the effect of causing chaos.  One now is not quite sure whether to complain or remain happy, as it is; at least the much required rain for power generation is upon us but many other sections of society are inconvenienced by the magnitude and strength of the rain. The burden of caring in an environment or society that seems not  to share that same passion may seem daunting. Burdens, passions and hopes come with a demand; they demand your attention, investment of self and resources but more than anything they demand that you act; they demand that you rise up despite opposition and stand against injustice. This has been “All Creatures Animal Welfare League’s” drive from its inception; to ensure that the animals of Malawi are treated with a bit more kindness and dignity. Despite the lack of very key resources such as kennels, “All Creatures” has insisted on providing shelter and food to the most desperate animals in Lilongwe urban, conducting numerous rescue operations also with the help of the Malawi police service for which we are very grateful. All CreaturesAnimal Welfare League , with the kind support of The Humane Society International and Alice Morgan Wright Edith-Goode, on 3 rd November 2016, conducted a free “Spay and Neuter” clinic in Kasungu. This was done in collaboration with Kasungu Elephants Fund and was aimed at reducing the number of stray dogs around the National Park. The team from All Creatures was comprised of four vets, a vet nurse, an education officer and the driver and they arrived in Kasungu at 9am where they were welcomed by a veterinary officer who was waiting along with some beneficiaries and their dogs who had arrived early. The team was given two huts, one in which to store their equipment and another, a shed under which they were to conduct the operations. The team was prepared to operate on a maximum of 15 dogs, and so they set up the tables, hung a banner and were ready to go! Once the set up was done, the team begun registering the dogs present and the started out the operations, ...

All Creatures Animal Welfare League in collaboration with Kasungu Elephant Fund on 3 rd November 2016, held a free Spay and Neuter clinic with the support of the Humane Society International . The aim of the exercise was to reduce the number of stray animals around the park. To make the most of this initiative, the All Creatures Humane Education team set up a humane education session at Kaswam’chenje primary school , which is one of the schools surrounding the park. The team from Kasungu Elephant Fund assisted All Creatures by linking the Humane Education team with the school officials and setting up the event. The event was attended by the whole school; an estimated 1000 plus pupils who enthusiastically participated in the lesson. The pupils were taught about Rabies; how fatal it is, its signs and symptoms, preventative measures and what to do as first aid treatment for someone bitten by an animal suspected to have the virus.
